Porirua marae
PA Wellington Maori tribes from all over the North Island gathered on Porirua's Takapuwahia Marae for the_ opening of a new meeting house, Toa Rangatira. The new meeting house replaces an old building opened on May 16, 1961, by the Maori chief, Mahutu te Toko, from the Maniapoto tribe in Te Kuiti.
The ceremony was performed by his great-grand-son, Tukee Tere Waanu, who recited the same special waiata that was given by Mahutu te Toko at the opening of the original meeting house.
That building, which had deteriorated badly, was demolished in 1980 and the new one was started soon after.
