EXERCISE ‘SOUTHERN SAFARI ’82’

Southern Safari 'B2, a two-week military exercise in the Lake Tekapo area at the end of last month, included more than 1800 soldiers from five countries. Five hundred and seventy infantrymen from Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Britain combined with 1245 soldiers of the 2nd-lst Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, based at Burnham, and other New Zealand Army units. It was the third land exercise to be held under the auspices of the Five Power Defence Arrangment, after previous exercises in Australia and Malaysia. One aim was to show the partners how to work together. For this company-sized groups, from each country, combined as a battalion. All training was held in a conventional warfare setting in open country. Air support was provided by the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Southern Safari was divided into three phases: advance, defence and withdrawal. The “enemy” for the exercise was the New Zealand Army. The director of the exercise was Colonel L. G. Williams, commander of the New Zealand Army’s 3rd Task Force Region. BOTTOM RIGHT: Private Shafiee Mohammed Salleh, of Singapore, waits for the enemy attack.
