Water weed blockages very costly

PA Wellington Clearing exotic water weeds from lakes, rivers and drainage systems could cost up to $9 million a year if they are allowed to spread, said the Noxious Plants Council secretary. Miss Jacky Challis, in’ a press release.

About 30 per cent of New Zealand's drains were already affected by unwanted water weeds, and they were also causing serious problems in lakes, Miss Challis said.

"The introduced weeds had not yet reached the limits of their distribution." she said. "If they did. the annual clearing bill could reach $9 million."

The council had begun a programme aimed at preventing the plants from spreading.
