Support sought for forest
Wellington reporter
Conservationists have been asked to participate in a letter-writing campaign to the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) to save native forests in the middle of the North Island.
The Waihaha and Pureora forests are the last surviving major remnants of lowland native forest in the central North Island, west of Lake Taupo, and form part of the Pureora State Forest Park.
The letter-writing campaign is being organised by the Joint Campaign on Native Forests, which is based in Nelson and which represents four organisations:, the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society, the Native Forests Action Council. the Federated Mountain Clubs, and the Environment and Conservation Organisation.
A spokesman for the Joint Campaign on Native Forests said that because the Minister of Forests (Mr Elworthy) had not yet committed himself specifically to logging Waihaha forest, it might still be possible to save the area by appealing to the Prime Minister.
