Stallion services to be offered
Services to 12 stallions will be auctioned between races on the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's
Easter meeting tomorrow. The club has had a gener-. ous response from North Island studmasters in their efforts to raise money which will go towards the stake for the C. J. C. Breeders’ Stakes next season.
The best money-spinner from this year's auction, as at last year’s, will come from efforts to secure a service to the champion Balmerino.
Yearlings by Balmerino realised an average of $32,861 at the major yearling sales in New Zealand last summer, that placing him third on the list of firstseason sires. ■
Other stallions for which services have been donated for tomorrow’s auction are Smuggler. Frassino, Auk. Honourary Degree, Catus, Native Turn. Double Speed. Delaneige, Sovereign Prince, Butty, and Blue Vermilion. Mr Keith Haub will travel from Auckland and Mr Peter
Kelly from Palmerston North to join Mr Rob Fielder, of Christchurch, to auction the stallion services. Messrs Haub. Kelly, and Fielder will also do stints as race commentators, so easing Mr Reon Murtha's workload. for tomorrow's' racing programme. The feature race on tomorrow's programme is the Conference Handicap, so named to mark the visit to Christchurch of members of the New Zealand Racing Conference for one of their meetings.
The programme for the final day on Saturday is one of the best balanced of the season.
Feature races area the $20,000 George Adams Handicap. for the metric milers, the Great Autumn Handicap for the stayers, the Great Western Champagne Stakes for two-year-olds, and the DB Three-Year-Old Championship Stakes.
