Finfish catch total down
PA Wellington The domestic fishing fleet has been allocated a third of the allowable finfish catch for the coming season within an over-all total slightly reduced from last season, it has been announced. Limits on catches have been introduced for hoki. ling, and dory, according to a statement issued by the office of the Minister of Fisheries (Mr Maclntyre). The domestic allocation in New Zealand's extended economic fishing zone (E.E.Z.) amounts to llU.tltlt) tonnes of the 340.u(K1-tonne trawl total.
Foreign-licensed vessels have been allocated I'M.luO tonnes (Japan. 66.000. Korea 56(10. and the U.S.S.R.. 32.500) and the joint-venture fleet. 125.900. Most of the 23.000-lonne total allocation for bottom long-lining — 16.500 tonnes
- had not been allocated to any particular fleet or country. the statement said. However. the domestic fleet had been given 3000 tonnes. Species limits will remain in force for hake, silver warehou. and orange roughy. The total allowable catch for all finfish is 363.000 tonnes, down from 379.000 last season.
Licence fees for foreign fishing in New Zealand's E.E.Z. have been increased, the Minister s statement said.
The fee will go up from $l7 to $lB a tonne of allocation. or from. $24 to $2B a tonne, depending on the area being fished. The bottom long-lining fee will rise from $25 to $3O a (onne.
