Huge recall of salmon
NZF’.A Washington The L’nited States Govern ment has expanded its recall of Alaskan salmon to cover eight packing plants and more than 50 million cans that may be contaminated by a deadly botulism toxin. None "of the cans have yet been detected in New Zealand.
"That begins to challenge the largest multiple recall wc have had in F.D.A. history — which was the mushroom recall of the 19705." said Mr Wayne Pines, a spokesman for the Food and Drug Administration.
A Belgian died in February after eating contaminated Alkaskan salmon. The recall is of salmon in 7 :i i-ounce cans sold under a variety of brand names. The recalled cans are identifiable only by the codes on their ends.
The F.D.A. believes a machine which shapes the cans may have torn some of their edges, leaving holes or other defects in the seams when the ends were attached. The openings can permit the formation of bptulinism. a toxin that can cause the often-fatal disease, botuhsm.
