Dictionaries in exams
PA Wellington Pupils sitting the School Certificate typing examination will be able to use an English dictionary this year for the first time. The chairman of the School Certificate Examination Board. Mr James Ross, said that the use of dictionaries was part of office practice and current teaching
practices should mirror this.
The Education Gazette says that the change allowing the use of English dictionaries in the typing and shorthand-typing examinations requires only minor amendments to the' existing prescriptions. The introduction of the dictionaries was discussed with schools, almost all of whom supported dictionaries. The Minister of Education
(Mr Wellington) has authorised their use. Mr Ross said that the introduction of dictionaries would not affect spelling standards.
Dictionaries would naturally assist poor spellers, but he discounted them as a pass/fail factor. The typing and shorthand examination had never been a test of spelling.
