Rakaia irrigation

Sir,—ln reply to D. G. Watson (April 1), I do not say that an irrigation scheme is not needed. I say that the farmers should be prepared to look for an alternative supply of water and not destroy a magnificent river. I personally do not believe that if suddenly all the farms were irrigated they would become intensive horticultural units, thus supplying more work, etc. I believe the farms would carry more stock and be able to claim more tax rebates and benefit the farmers, .not necessarily the

community. What about the benefits to the community from the 9000 anglers who use the river? They provide money to the community in the form of licence fees, buying fishing tackle, petrol use, etc. — Yours, etc., L. DAVIS. April 7, 1982.
