Basketball league qualifiers
Two sides qualified for the Countrywide Basketball League at a qualifying tournament in Napier last evening. Porirua Blue Herons and Auckland Metro qualified with wins over Napier Sun Hawkes and BurroughsKarori. respectively. The winner of a’ match today between Porirua and Auckland will play Canterbury in the opening match of the'Countrywide league in Christchurch late next month, Two black American players. James Lofton and Benny Anthony, who only arrived in New Zealand last Tuesday, were instrumental in Poriruas upset 80-77 win. over. Napier. Lofton scored 29 points while Anthonyscored 28. A new American, import for Napier. Dan Paghotti. scored a remarkable 42 points, but did not see the ball in the last fewminutes of play. Napier had led 40-34 at half time and yvith its 2-metre American Tom De Marcus scoring 19
points in the match had looked set to qualify for the league. The second qualifying match was an anti-climactic affair with Auckland leading throughout to beat Karori by 75-67. For Auckland Don Orndoff scored 24 points. Stan Hill 18. and Paul Barrett 14. For Karori Clyde Huntley scored 22 points. Max Hernoit 14. and John Saker 11. The two sides bring to eight the number competing in the 10 week league that will climax with a final in August. Canter-, bury. Nelson. Centrals (Wellington). Palmerston North. Hamilton. and Drake Personnel (Auckland), are the sides in the league. A meeting in Napier yesterdayafternoon decided to establish a second division “northern league" for five or possibly six North Island teams. Nite Site Saints (Wellington). Tauranga. Napier, and Wanganui have all indicated interest in the league and the first game has been scheduled for June 12.
