High level of church attendance

Fine weather helped to boost Easter service attendances at many Christchurch churches yesterday.

The Dean of Christchurch Cathedral (the Very Rev. M. Goodall) said that the fine weather had encouraged church-goers and congretations were slightly larger yesterday than previous years. Easter services in the Cathedral had also attracted a sizeable number of tourists, particularly Americans. ■ Many other churches in the city and suburbs reported above-average or average sized congregations. The Rev Dr P. M. Guthardt, of Knox Presbyterian Church, said

she had been told that her congregation yesterday was the biggest Easter congregation in the church for 10 years.

A minister at another church said that recent bad weather had discouraged parishoners from leaving on holiday during the long week-end.
