4000 seamen unemployed
Unemployment among British seafarers is expected to reach 5000 before Christmas, according to the General Council of British Shipping. This would represent, by far, the highest total of unemployed since World War 11. The hardest hit in terms of numbers and the proportion out of work are ratings. Last month the council reported that about 3000 ratings and 700 officers were reporting unemployed at. merchant navy establishments.
. • The council also said that the worst fears of the British shipping industry — that the total merchant fleet could shrink to under 30 million tonnes (deadweight) by the end of the year — are likely to be realised by the end of this year. In August alone the British flag fleet fell to just over 32 million tonnes and lost another 17 vessels totalling 600.000 tonnes. This means that the fleet has been reduced by over a third in the last five and a half years. New Zealand uses a different system, according to the South Island secretary of the Seamen’s Union (Mr T. B. Stuart), as the policy is not to replace leaving seamen. Nevertheless, the union currently has a waiting list of about 480 applications from qualified ratings.
