Obituary Mr J. van Tulder

Mr John van Tulder, who was closely associated with music and business in Christchurch, has died. He was 65. Mr van Tulder was born in Tilburg, the Netherlands, in 1916. He served in the Dutch Army until the Germans overran his country in 1940. He, his wife, and their four young children emigrated to New Zealand in 1951 and settled in Christchurch. Immediately, Mr van Tulder became immersed in the musical life of the city with emphasis on church music and, in particular, the Gregorian Chant.

70 Mr van Tulder was choirmaster of St Joseph’s Church, Papanui. He was instrumental in the founding of the St Joseph’s Light Operatic Society, which is still active and popular in Christchurch. In later years he was involved in the musical life of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Barbadoes Street. Mr van Tulder was prominent in the business community as managing director of Glenwear, Ltd, woollen goods manufacturer, in Colombo Street.

He is survived by his wife and five children.
