Escaper remanded to High Court
■l.'.--’
PA Gisborne An escaped prisoner, Colin Frank Griffiths, has been sent to the High Court at Auckland to be dealt with on most charges relating to his arrest, escape, and capture in October. Griffiths, aged 24, has pleaded guilty to charges of robbing a man at Opotiki of $5l while armed with a baseball bat; breaking and entering a house twice at Frasertown, near Wairoa; taking the householder’s car; getting into the same car unlawfully; assaulting the owner to avoid arrest; escaping from the Gisborne police cells; assault
with intent to facilitate the taking of a car; and taking the car of an Invercargill couple at Waihirere, near Gisborne. Some of the charges have been laid indictably, which would have meant a trial, but Griffiths asked to be able to plead guilty. He has been remanded to the High court for sentence on December 4. Still outstanding are two charges of attempting to rape a girl while he hid at the Frasertown house. He has been remanded without plea for a depositions hearing on these indictable charges on December 17.
