Jikk Adios wins championship

NZPA Sydney Sydney’s leading reinsman, Brian Hancock, stepped aside to allow his brother to win the Australian - Pacing Championship at Harold Park with the Queensland-owned pacer, Jikk Adios.

Brian Hancock qualified both Jikk Adios and Willadios for the $75,000 Championship Final but elected to drive Willadios.

Willadios had a brief moment of glorv when he led

the field to the first turn but his stablemate soon took over and raced away to a record-breaking seven-metre win.

The Sydney-trained pacer. Lord Pancho, took second placing, two metres ahead of the Victorian, Kotare Knight.

Jikk Adios took 2min 4.9 s for the 2700 m, 2.6 s inside the previous record held by Markovina. Willadios finished fourth.

The training triumph for Hancock was a sentimental one. Jikk Adios is a son of last seaon’s broodmare of the year, Teeny Rena, Hancock's first major winner in harness racing. Willadios was the first into stride but was immediately headed by Kotare Knight. Kotare Knight’s driver. Vin Knight, said he would have won the race if the Hancock brothers had had only one horse in the race. “I’m not suggesting that they drove as a team, it’s just that . they were both driving the horses that I had to beat.” ) The back marker, Koala King, began perfectly but his driver, Kevin Newirian, said later that the 1980 InterDominion winner had raced like a tired horse.
