Laser, Escort Sport series
The forthcoming motor racing season will feature a new championship series that should provide widespread competitor and spectator appeal — the Ford Sport Championship, for standard production Ford Laser Sport and Escort Sport models. The series will comprise seven rounds, beginning at Pukekohe on December 6, thereafter the big January international meetings, concluding at Timaru on February 7, The over-all prize fund of $6OOO for these seven races provides competitors with a substantial championship stake.
The new series represents an extension of the popular Escort Sport circuit series
that has provided very close and exciting racing since 1978.
Although Escort Sports that previously competed are still eligible, most attention will be on the. new Laser 1.5 Sport' hatchbacks, already proven class winners in the opening races in the Benson and Hedges Saloon Car Series.
Specifications for both models in the Ford Sport Series are completely standard production, with ho modifications being permitted. Very close .racing is likely to result and the Ford Sport Series seems likely to provide competitors and spectators alike with keen challenge and interest in the forthcoming season.
