MR COLIN McNICHOLL ‘Time for Labour to retire’
Labour recently, celebrated 60 years of holding Avon, which is a “good retiring age,” says National’s candidate, Mr Colin McNicholl.
Christchurch suffers from a lack of confidence, he says, due considerably to “Labour Party members advocating gloom at every turn.” Employers are also reluctant to make any positive moves because if they fail they’d have to shoulder large redundancy payments. Mr McNicholl says that his background of “self-motiva-tion and achievement” will enable him to give commmunity leadership and encouragement needed in Avon.
“With positive leadership and encouragement there is no reason why the eastern suburbs couldn’t be the envy of greater Christchurch,” he adds.
“There are so many natural environmental advantages not being exploited to the electorate’s benefit.”
Avon contains many smaller cottages which Mr McNicholl says he would like to see converted into larger family homes to “give these suburbs some impetus.” He would like to see extra loan money available for this purpose.
Nationally Mr McNicholl puts his order of priorities as inflation taxation and unemployment. “New Zealand people as a whole are finding it difficult to adjust to a competitive way of life as opposed to the cost-plus system,” he says. Work does not frighten him, says Mr McNicholl, and it is just a “matter of getting
on and doing things.” Mr McNicholl has served on several community organisations — the Parent Teachers’ Association, Jaycees and the Residents’ Association. He has served on three company boards, New Zealand business associations and has a keen interest in sports and coaching. Mr McNicholl, aged 42, and his wife, Annette, have two sons. He is a self-em-ployed builder. “With sincerity, integrity, and dedication I consider I can offer Avon residents better representation and a voice in Government,” he says.
