Cath Brown to coach again
Against a background of several tournament successes, the able and exEerienCed Miss- Cath Brown as again won the top coaching position in Canterbury netball. She has a . tough early assignment in choosing and preparing a provincial side to-reach a peak for the match against England at the Hagley courts early next month.;’ Her co-selectors will be Mrs Maire Erickson, who has also been named as man? ager,‘ and Mrs Kay O’Reilly, who, for several years, has maintained an unbeaten record , as coach of the Canterbury , undergo team. Mrs Ethne Rouse won the nomination for this grade, a step up from her previous position as coach to the under-17 team. The manager is Mrs Bev. Marshall and the third selector is a forrter New Zealand captain, Mrs Judy Blair. n To keep Canterbury in line
with the rest of New Zealand and Australia the age limit has been dropped to under-16 •for the.third ranking Canterbury'team and Mrs Frances Beckham; South Brighton’s coach, has been named as coach-manager. Her co-selec-tors are Mesdames Betty Ward and Pat Berry, the Riccarton coach. . ..••• Tried as an experiment last season and at times not always taken too seriously, a Canterbury B team now. seems likely, to become a permanent part of the representative scene, It will be selected after the other teams have been 'named. Mrs Alison Elder will again be coach-manager, < but this time, instead of the team being named by the Canterbury A selectors, Mrs Joan Shearer has been appointed as co-selector. The senior reserve coachmanager is Mrs Pat Carrick, a position she has held for a number of years, with Mes-
dames Jan Fraser and Verna Kelly assisting with' selection. A newcomer to Canterbury, and a former coach of Hawkes Bay Minor,. Mrs Leone Holland, has been named as coach-manager of the second team and as this is a big grade she has three selectors to assist — Mesdames Greta Glue and Lyn Dobson and a senior player from St Nicholas, Miss Rosalie Doyle. A new “under age” grade has been slotted after this and the combined fifth and sixth grade team dropped. Coaching the under-15 team will be Miss Jane McFarlane, from St Nicholas, and to cover the many grades in which this age group plays, Mesdames Marlene Hogg, J. Burke, Colleen Dunne and Mary Reid have been appointed to face the challenge. The three “under age” teams, each providing a feed to the one above, should be a great
incentive to many players in secondary school teams who have not had a chance ■ against older more experienced players in their grades. A senior player has been appointed as coach-manager of the third grade representative team. She is Mrs Vicki Glendenning, wing defence for Hagley, and she will be assisted by Mesdames Rayleen Maxwell, Nancy Shah and Naomi Rodgers. The pattern is repeated in the fourth grade with the Teachers’ College wing defence, Miss Nicki Hudson, gaining the coach-manager position with Mesdames Claire Matoe, Pam Cleeve, and Lois Mossop as her coselectors. A busy representative season for all grades is in the planning stages and Canterbury teams as always are expected to do well.
