Twizel’s population down 19 per cent
Twizel’s population fell by 1034, or 19.9- per cent, in the last five years, mainly because of the winding down of the Upper Waitaki power project, according to preliminary results from the 1981 Census. So far, the only other area in "The Press” circulation region to register a population drop since the last census was Winchester, which lost 11 citizens, or 3.9 per cent of its population. The Government Statistician. Dr J. H. Darwin, said that both Cheviot County and the Chatham Islands reversed the population outflows recorded in the 1976 census. Cheviot County had a population increase of 133, or 9.5 per cent. The Chatham Islands’ population increase of 137, or 22.3 per cent, was partly the result of addi-
tional labour required to build the new airport. Havelock, in Marlborough, had a population increase of 71 (23.1 per cent) and Pleasant Point, in Strathallan, gained 120 more residents (12.3 per cent). An additional 55 citizens gave Temuka a population increase of 1.5 per cent. Methven had a population boost of 77 (8.8 per cent). Dr Darwin said population areas used for comparison were adjusted to take into account boundar.v changes since the 1976 Census. s
