Shorter week ‘must come’
PA Whangarei The 35-hour working week has to come, but only if it represents 40 hours production, says the former president of the Federation of Labour, Sir Thomas Skinner. Sir Thomas told a Whangarei Rotary Club function the shorter working week had to produce "the same amount in 35 hours as in 40 hours, and has got to be done without any reduction in basic take-home pay.” Later, Sir Thomas said outside the function the 35hour week has “got to come.” He said he believed the industrial atmosphere created by the "restructuring.” which he described as the growing use of new technology, was costing jobs. "The world is a difficult place. Technological changes are with us. More leisure time is not the answer. This can only come about if we earn it,”- Sir Thomas said.
