Lyttelton upset by Heathcote remarks
The Lvttelton Town Clerk. Mr D. A. Hillier, yesterday expressed surprise at what he said were derogatory remarks made by the chairman of (lie Heathcote County Council, Mr 0. T. Alpers, at a meeting of (he Heathcote council on Thursday evening: Mr Alpers said at the meeting that the new union of administrative and engineering services between the Lyttelton Borough Council and the Mount Herbert County Council was a strange union between a regressing port town and a small but prosperous rural area. Mr Hillier said. “The borough and county have much in common. We al-' ready share rubbish disposal facilities and an extension of these to town planning, ad-
ministrative. and engineering is an obvious step that will provide benefits to both the county and our borough. . "We understand that the county council, has many reasons for wishing to trapsfer its administration and we do not intend to comment on these. However, we take extreme exception to the derogatory comments made bv Mr Alpers about oyr borough, especially those relating to the services we provide. "I would point out that although a small borough, we provide full and extensive services to our ratepayers many of which the Heathcote County Council does not supply to theirs, such as a full water supply, library, swimming pool, and launch services."
