'Twizel houses wanted"
Geraldine reporter Twizel’s future appears less certain after the Member of Parliament for Waitaki, Mr J. H. Elworthy, told Lie Mackenzie County Council yesterday that the Government had no proposals for the town. Mr Elworthy said that this decision was reached after various reports were received from Government departments. The Ministry of Works was still awaiting the final decision from -the electricity division of the Ministry of Energy on-the location of staff houses. Staff wanted the houses at Omarama, said Mr Elworthy. He said that any developer could put forward a proposal for Twizel and discuss it with the County Council, which was the territorial planning authority. Mr Elworthy said that the 1981 energy report should be out soon and hoped that the Lower Waitaki scheme, involving several dams, would go anead as work at Twizel wound down. .In that case,' houses from Twizel would be needed at Duntroon and work would be provided for existing Twizel staff. The Ministry of Works, said, however, that it could be some time before a concrete proposal for the houses could be put to the council.
