Mourie’s club hit by arsonist
PA Wellington, All Black captain Gran'am Mourie’s local rugby dub at Opunake is stepping up security because of an arson Attempt on its premises. A burnt chair and cleaning mop, which had been doused in turps, were discovered by builders completing $20,000 renovations. The fire did not spread. The club’s secretary, Mr R. J. Gaffaney, said the fire was . being treated as suspicious, because the premises had been broken into, but
nothing had been taken,, The police have discounted conjecture by club members that the fire was caused by someone ' objecting to the club’s pro-tour stand, or to Mourie’s anti-tour stand. “It was probably . local goons,” a policeman said. “There was no graffiti, so we’ve ruled out the Springbok tour as a reason.” Mourie, now holidaying with his wife in Argentina, is due home next week after playing one match for Paris University.
