Compton on 98

Special correspondent Wellington Bruce Compton’s bid to become the seventh jockey in New Zealand racing history to ride a century of winners in one season was not advanced from his rides at Woodville yesterday. Compton w’ent to Woodville with his tally at 98, and the chances of him reaching his century there looked bright but thirds on Prince Trelay and The Fox was as close as he was to get to an illusive win. It has been a busy time for the hard working Mata-mata-based rider and if yesterday he admitted that at times he did not know whether he was coming or going, it was not hard to believe. This week already he had ridden at Matamata (two winners) and Avondale (one winner) on Wednesday. Compton’s chances of reaching his century within the next few days looks bright. He rides at Ellerslie today, Blenheim on Monday, Woodville on Tuesday then back to Blenheim on Wednesday, followed by a trip to Dargaville on Friday and next Saturday Te Rapa. Other jockeys to have ridden 100 winners in a single season are Keith Voitre. Hector Gray, before 1968 and then Brian Andrews, David Peak, Bob Vance and Bill Skelton. Sirtain’s rider The Takanini apprentice jockey, Grant Cooksley has been engaged to ride Sirtain in the Nolan Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double at Ellerslie today.—P.A. Nomination The Greymouth Trotting Club will nominate its president, Mr R. W. Dayne, for an executive position on the New Zealand Trotting Conference.—P.A.
