Wilkinson scuds clear
A superb sailing exhibition by Allan Wilkinson of Christchurch in his new all-metal craft brought him success in the South Island land yachting championships. Wilkinson won the class two and three event at the meeting, which was run by the Pegasus Land Yacht. Club in a gusty nor'wester at Wigram. The title-holder in the class, Paul Sheppard, was put out of contention with a damaged axle after a tacking error by another competitor. Sailing consistently well, Allan Agnew, of Christchurch, won class four. Stew-
art Rose, who crossed the line first in all events in this class, made an error which cost him maximum penalty points in the first race. But he was still able to finish third overall, behind Agnew and Wilkinson. A special prize was deserved by Christine Rose, who raced spiritedly although seven months pregnant. She won the women’s class four in spanking fashiod, often lapping rivals. Colleen Linney and Heather Jefferies (Nelson) were second and third. The much fancied Nicky Rothwell was soundly beaten in the junior class four by
Kerry Inns, whose tactical appreciation was pronounced. The Grant brothers. Chris and John, were second equal. Wilkinson beat Bob Walker (Nelson) and lan Jamieson (Christchurch) to win the Jeffries Jewellers class two and three marathon over the full Lady Wigram circuit. The winner’s control was admirable in an event in which many yachts were disabled by the strong wind. The class four marathon was won by Rose, who lapped all but one of his rivals in his English-designed yacht. Agnew was second and John Gwynne (Christchurch) third.
