More container traffic handled
Lyttelton's container terminal lias handled more traffic than estimated, during the past two months, a reflection of the increase in containerisation, especially of exports. About 70 per cent of New Zealand wool is shipped in containers now. All shipments to North America. Japan. Australia, and the European Economic Community are in that form. The increase for meat is 65 per cent, but conventional methods are still used to export to Iran, Iraq, the remainder of the Middle East and Russia, because those countries have not adopted containers yet. Cheese exports have joined the trend, with about 50 per cent now despatched by container. The overall containerised figure for nonrefrigerated items is about 20 per cent, compared with 70 per cent for refrigerated exports. The move away from. conventional methods has not resulted in any less business for insurance companies. Underwriters report continuing claims for water damage, condensation, sweating, and damage, because of the use of old containers. ARRIVALS Union Lyttelton (7.10 a.m.), 4376, Wellington (U.S.S.).
