Nuclear weapons

Sir,—The equatorial axis oi the Earth measures approximately 7926 miles, the diameter about 6000 miles. This is merely for calculation purposes. A nuclear device triggered at a height of 10,00012.000 miles, an easy matter with today’s science, would blanket the Earth which, being a moving body, would pass through an area of nuclear fallout. What the radiation of a weapon of that size would be or the possible reaction on our atmosphere and ice-caps is horrific to contemplate. Could not the peoples of the world through the United Nations have some say in this or must we, dragged by political megalomaniacs, end up as a substandard post-nuclear remnant of survivors? A thermal nuclear holocaust truly big, is not beautiful.—Yours, etc., R. W. H. WADE. April 22, 1981.
