Support sought

Christchurch's soccer clubs are to be asked to make a contribution towards New Zealand's World Cup bid. The Rangers club has decided that it is time the city’s clubs showed some support for the national team, to help ease the financial burden of contesting the qualifying group. Rangers will donate $lOO to the World Cup campaign and, in a letter to Christchurch’s other clubs, suggests they do the same. A Rangers spokesman, Mr Alan Smythe,

pointed out that if all the clubs in the Canterbury region contributed the same amount, a total sum of about $2500 would result. "Many people, including players, coaches and administrators have put countless hours into this campaign often with little or no support from the code generally,” said Mr Smythe. “A spontaneous gesture on our behalves is surely the least we can do and hopefully it would prompt clubs in other areas to follow suit.”
