Advertisement Cheaper Food Hundreds of Canterbury families have been quick to learn the advantages of using the new system of shopping for grocery items at the new Big Saver Food Barn recently opened in Tuam Street on Colombo Street side of the Civic Offices. The system is easy, and simple — customers price the selected goods themselves with marking pens provided and, using prices indicated on the shelf above the goods — when selection has been completed the shopping trolley is wheeled to new style checkouts where cashiers ring on each item on to the cash register as they transfer each item to another trolley. The total is then recorded and the customer pays cash. At that point the sale is completed and it is over to the customer to pack their own goods on the packing bench provided behind checkouts. Newspaper is provided for packing frozen foods or delicatessen items and cartons as available are free — but paper sacks if required are charged for. Customers know what they are paying as they have done the pricing themselves — it’s the things that are not done which keeps the 1200-1300 lines being offered at such low prices. You price your own — pack your own —■ carry your own. There are no specials as such, but every item in the Food Barn is at a low price and there are no quantity limits. Its fashionable to be frugal and shopping the Big Saver Food Barn way saves money for other enjoyment.
