National Library

Sir,—When I visited our National Library, the home or rather several homes housing our valuable records of our heritage, historical, cultural and recreational, I was appalled to find our priceless archives virtually at risk in unsatisfactory and potentially dangerous buildings. Prompted to inquire if anything was being done to remedy this I found that the library has never been adequately staffed as a reference or research library. Staff work in damp, illlit basements: last year the Turnbull was flooded, but the National Government was unmoved. The 1975 Labour Government approved and began building, assessed to cost SI2M. After the National Government was elected it stopped the work. Now, five years later, the cost has increased to more than S2OM. Because it has top priority on the 1981 Labour Party works programme, building will start again immediately after the election, according to Mr M. A. Connelly M.P., the Labour spokesman for works and development.— Yours, etc., H. R. PEERS. April’26, 1981.
