Riots in Brixton
Sir,—J. Bevan's letter (April 23), re your editorial, is in keeping with what I observed during my recent 10 months stay in London. Many caring Britons sincerely wish that Mr Enoch Powell’s advice had been taken at the onset and consequently these somewhat staid people are now looking for a way out of all that is foreign to them. The jovial Bobby does his best to keep the peace, but the sad part of it is that the ethnic population find it most difficult to find accommodation while the foreigners find it “as right.” On entry into the U.K. they join the dolequeues and of course this also angers the usually good humoured English. The colour of one’s skin is not frowned upon but standards are vastly different.—Yours, etc., M: PHILLIPS. April 23, 1981.
