Good squash debut
Christchurch Football’s 1 first appearance in men's < division-one squash brought a 1 confidence-boosting 8-2 vic- 1 tory over High School Old 1 Boys I. '1 John Oakley and Paul 1 Monk looked very sound in the second and third position, 1 and the team's only loss ' came at the top, where < Barry Gardiner struck a for- j midable opponent in Law- 1 rence Skurr. ' Two teams, Christchurch I and Sumner, recorded clean ! sweeps in this, the opening Blank Trophy round. The Sumner players thrived on the Ashburton courts and the three top players. Bryan Simpson, Ron Marshall, and John Christensen, all won in straight games and conceded only seven, 10, and nine points respectively. Christchurch had no trouble against Suburbs in the top and bottom spots, but the latter could well have won at both two and three. George Balani (Suburbs), professing soreness after his horseback ride in the celebrity race at Riccarton the previous day, lost to Laurie Wilson after leading, 8-4, in the fifth while his teammate, Murray Carson, found the tin rather too often as he surrendered big leads in the first two . games against Graham Foulds. Burnside had a real battle before shading Linwood, 8-2. As it turned out Linwood would have won if Robbie Burnett had been able to take advantage of his two match balls (8-4 and 8-7) in the fifth against the higherranked Clements, who rallied with some dazzling nicks and drops. It was, nevertheless, a fine performance by Burnett, and the Canterbury Squash Rackets Association president (Mr Dour Lawrie) said that it was "the best club game I have seen in two years.” The- two No. Is, Craig Hibbert (Linwood) and Chris Wasley, were on the court for a‘full 60min — just for three, games — before Hibbert triumphed. Wasley had led, 7-2, in the second, but was unable to advance his score. • i University was able to take six points from its clash with High School Old Boys 11, even though Hamish Dowell (who was two points away from the match at 7-4-in the third) bowed in five to John Tolchard who was having one of those days when nicks seem his of right. ; In the women's competition, High School Old Boys caused. something of a surprise bv beating Sumner I, 8-2. Lorraine Cowan, who has a national grading of Cl, had a most creditable success over Joan Terrell, a 81, and Kate Hatherton came
back well from two sets down to beat Suzanne Davies. And at No. 1 the Old Boys captain, Bette King, was very happy to extend Merle Holland the full distance. ' Both Burnside teams picked up eight points, although Kathy Hargreaves (burnside I) started slowly and dropped the first two sets to her Christchurch I opponent, Lorna Symes. There was a very tight struggle between Lancaster. Park, making its division-one ■ debut, and Suburbs, with the former just triumphing on a 10-9 games countback. The points were 125-122. All but one of the rubbers went five games. Results:— MEN Christchurch 10, Suburbs 0 R. W. Hayes beat M. Morrison, 9-3, 9-0. 9-0; L, Wilson beat G. Balani. 5-9, 6-9, 9-4, 96, 10-8; J. G.
