Pulp mill proposal

PA Nelson The Tokai Pulp Company of Japan and Nelson Pine Forest, Ltd, are investigating a pulp-type, wood-processing proposal for Nelson. The chairman of Nelson Pine Forest, Mr Garth Butler, said that thinking on the proposal was “fairly advanced.” Tokai Pulp buys wood chips from both Nelson Pine Forest and H. Baigent and Son. Tokai Pulp’s New Zealand representative, Mr .George Murata, said the company would continue to buy chips for its Kraft pulp plant in Japan. In addition, the company was studying the establishment of a “pulp-type” processing industry in Nelson. ■ Mr Butler said markets would have to be assured before any decision to go ahead was made. World timber products markets were weak, he said.
