Whale survey ships return
Wellington reporter i After completing a two-1 month whale survey in Anta r c t i c waters, three overseas research vessels — the Kyomaru 27 and Toshimaru 11 from Japan, and the Vdunichivyi 34 from Russia — will arrive back at Wellington today... . The three vessels were undertaking a whale survey on behalf of the International Whaling Commission as part of its Decade of Cetacean Research. They worked mainly' in waters south of New Zealand and Australia and marked 5211 minke whales,

Several experiments on sighting methods for whale population assessments were parried but and. after extensive debriefing in Wellington during the next week, the results of the cruise will be submitted to the Commission at its June meeting this year. There were 10 scientists from Australia. Japan, South Africa, the United States, Russia, and New Zealand. The New Zealander was Mr Paul Ensor, a marine biologist, of Christchurch.
