Anti-smelter society
.PA ~ , Dunedin Prominent’ figures in business; labour, and politics are included among founding members of a new society co-ordinating legal activity against the second aluminium smelter. The establishment of the Coalition for. Rational Economic -and Environmental Development in New Zealand was announced yesterday by a spokesman, Mr R. Thomson. -’ ty’ The names of 20 founding members are included in their capacity as indivi r ’ duals. < Among the--members are a former Bing Harris chairman, Sir Jack Harris; the Public Service Asso- ■ ciation’s president, Mr D. 'H. Thorp; the South Island Maori Council’s chairman, Mr W. J. Ka- . retai; and a Federation of
Labour executive member, Ms Sonia Davies. The national society will oversee funds raised for legal action, and will coordinate legal activity by groups and individuals at any stage of planning and construction in the second smelter project. y “The main/activities of the society will centre on ‘ the , National/Development' Act,” Mr Thomson said. “It will also work through. other direct and indirect legal channels. “In particular, these may involve questions with regard to ancillary developments necessary for the smelter, and questions connected with the environmental /impact report.” . ’•£ / J . . The society would act on behalf - of groups and individuals who wished to take legal steps opposing
the smelter but could not afford to do so, Mr Thomson said. A national financial appeal would be set up with a target of $50,000, and a touring anti-smelter information centre would be launched in Auckland early, next month. - i: A meeting, xvas held at Dunedin this week to complete details of the society’s constitution. Mr Thomson has resigned as a spokesman for the Save Aramoana campaign to work with the society, which would be incorporated. More members were sought. The society believed that development should hot close off options/for small and medium enterprises by /'squandering rather than carefully allocating resources, Mr Thomson said. ■
