Surgeon ‘prepares for Shah’
NZPA-Reuter : * * Cairo An American heart surgeon, Dr Michael Debakey, will consult with Egyptian doctors in Cairo today about when to remove the cancerous spleen of the deposed Shah of Iran.
The. former Shah, who arrived in Egypt from Panama on Monday, is at a heavilyguarded military hospital in the Cairo suburb of Maadi.Q Dr Debakey and a sixmember medical team arrived from Houston, Texas, with surgical equipment and blood plasma. Earlier this year. Dr Debakey consulted with Yugoslav doctors on the treatment of a blood clot in President Tito’s left leg which later resulted in the amputation of the limb.
The semi-official Egyptian newspaper, “Al Ahram,” said yesterday that the blood group of the former Shah was ‘B-negative,’ which was rare in Egypt. It said at least 15 litres of the blood would be needed during an operation. The newspaper quoted a doctor attending the former Shah as saying the spleen should be removed as soon as possible in order to save the former monarch’s life. A senior adviser to the former Shah, Mr Robert Armao, said he had left Panama, because - he had been unable to get the medical treatment he needed. “Some Panamanians were very unco-operative,” Mr Armao said.
■ Militant Muslim students staged a demonstration yesterday on the campus of Cairo University against the former Shah’s presence.
