Student breaks fast
A Christchurch student, Mr Garth Ritchie, broke his fast about 2 a.m. yesterday after not having eaten since last Saturday in a bid to help an Indonesian friend who has been refused political asylum in New Zealand. Mr Ritchie could not be reached yesterday but one of his flatmates said Mr Ritchie had eaten some old apples on Wednesday night
and was now feeling as-1 hamed of his weakness. ' When he began the : water-only fast, Mr Ritchie j said he would starve him-, self to death if the Under-! Secretary of Immigration i (Mr Malcolm) did not ans-i wers his questions about ‘ Mr Jose Satyadharma’s 1 case for political asylum. Mr Satyadharma hasl been in hiding since he : lost his bid to stay in New i Zealand.
