County tapes to remain secret

The Heathcote County Council last evening banned public access to the county's taperecordings of council and committee meetings. The only exceotion will be tapes of hearings held to conduct the review of the district planning scheme. The decision was made after the council met in committee for threequarters of an hour at the beginning of the meeting. The public and news media were excluded during the discussion, which was prompted by a letter from the county solicitor on the subject of public

access to the tapes. The decision would also apply to the news media, said the County Chairman (Mr J. M. McKenzie) when he announced the results of the discussion to the public. The move to have the county solicitor's letter discussed in committee was made under protest from Cr J. Richardson. He said there was no reason for the secrecv as the letter was only a legal opinion and councillors had not seen the letter. Mr McKenzie had been opposed to council business being conducted in committee in the past, Cr Richardson said.
