Police policy ’clear’ says Mr Walton
PA Wellington The Commissioner of Police (Mr R. J. Walton) rejected a suggestion that the police may be loath to enforce any Government ban on the Socialist Unity Party. Answering fears expressed by the secretary of the Police Association (Dr R. A. Moodie) that the police could find themselves being used as political instruments, Mr Walton said police policy was quite clear on matters of law enforcement.
“There is no question of members of the police decid-
ing for themselves whether they would administer any laws passed by Parliament.”
Mr Walton said that as far as the police were concerned, if a law was passed by Parliament it was the role of the police to enforce it with the discretion normally observed in respect of ail other offending. “The personal opinions of any policeman on any particular aspect of the laws of the country cannot .be allowed to affect his attitude in impartially enforcing the law,” he said.
