Reward for top karate exponent

■Yet another trip, to the United States' by the' wellknown Christchurch exponent of Seido karate, Renzie Hanham, has brought its reward. ' ’-. . ' ' '

Hanham, making his fourth trip to New York (the world headquarters of Seido Karate), was promoted to a fifth dan black belt’last Sunday.

This is believed to be the senior xkarate grading in •Seido outside New - York. Seido is a world-wide organisation with branches.in such countries as Australia, South Africa and Rhodesia. . Hanham has now had five overseas trips in a bid to keep abreast of karate techniques. He visited Japan in 1969 and also went to New York in 1975, 1976 and 1978.

On the' present trip Hanham is accompanied by his wife, Karen, and the head of the Timartr> branch . of. 'Seido, Mike Higgs. They have been training under the seventh dan, Tadashi Nakamura, for nearly four weeks.

The trio have been training very hard three times a day for up to one hour and a half, Mrs Hanham I losing 9kg in the process. They are expected home in about 10 days:
