Australian branch of N.Z. stud in news

The- Australian branch of a New Zealand Angus stud has been in the news. The first home sale of the Te Mania Angus stud of Mr and Mrs Andrew Gubbins, of Colac, Victoria, on March 17 was reported to the strongest Angus sale this year and possibly the best on record for the breed in Australia. The Australian stud was formed in 1971 by Mr Frank Wilding, of Te

Mania, Hundalee. and his brother-in-law, Mr Gubbins.

The recent sale grossed $181,050 with 43 two-year-old bulls averaging $3453, which was more than 25 per cent up on 1979, when the cattle were sold in the Pertangus sale at Broadford, and 14 females averaged $2321. The top price for a bull at the sale was $19,000 for Te Mania Excel XlOl, a son of Te Mania Uranium, which sold for a record $21,000 two years ago at the Suzuki Angus classic sale at Wodonga in Australia.

Te Mania Excel, aged. 23 months, weighed 710 kg and had had a daily weight gain since birth of 1.01 kg.

He is seen in the accompanying photograph. Mr Gubbins is on the left with the purchaser, Mr Bob Cheyne, of R. and S. Cheyne, Cheyne Farms, Timboon, who is on the right. Also in the photograph is Mr Sandy Thomson, manager • for the Cheynes. A 10-1-year-old female, Te Mania Q 613, the dam of Te Mania Uranium,

sold for the top female price of $6OOO. At this year's Suzuki Angus beef classic Pinora Ultimate XII by Te Mania Ultimate out of Te Mania Durroon 533 was grand champion bull and sold for $19,500 and Barwidgee Isodyx, sired by Surrender of Te Mania, with bull calf at foot, was judged grand champion cow and sold for the Australasian record of $14,500 to Mrs Vivienne Kerr, of Tibooburra Angus stud, Victoria, who also bought Te Mania Uranium for the record figure in 1978. The champion unled cow at the classic was also sired by a Te Mania bull, Te Mania U 59.
