Russian moves in Afghanistan „
Sir, — M. Creel (February 26) is side-tracking and appears to have abandoned his argument on the central issue. His absurd comparison of N.AiT.O. and the Soviet-Afghan treaty has already been effectively rebutted. He is unable to show how the so-called friendship treaty can be used unilaterally by the Soviet Union to justify the invasion of Afghanistan. However worthless the previous Amin regime may have been, it was nevertheless universally recognised as the de-jure. government. The Soviets entered Afghanistan without invitation for the express and obvious purpose of overthrowing that government and imposing one of its own choice, without regard for Afghan self-determination. If that is not an. Invasion then .Hitler did not invade the So- ? viet Union. It is: a legal and logical imnossibility for this treaty (whatever its terms) to be used as a vehicle to justify the events which have, happened. I close my case. — Yours, etc., D. J. O’ROURKE. February 26, T9BO.
