Report cites ‘unrest’ for Fiji jail riot

NZPA Suva Jail riots in Fiji at Christmas and the New Year resulted from “an intense feeling of discontent, disillusionment, dissatisfaction, and general . unrest among prisoners,” a report on the riots says. The reperrt by the Solic-itor-General (Mr Qoriniasi Bale) was considered by the Cabinet this week and some of its contents were released in a Government statement. The report found that the riots caused §483,000 damage at Suva prison, §65,000

at Lautoka, and $5OOO at Labasa. It recommended an overhaul of the prisons administration and an investigation of alternatives to imprisonment so that the number of prison inmates could be reduced. It also suggested using prison labour more effectively and ploughing its proceeds back into the prisons. Another proposal Was to extend the legal aid scheme to cover cases in the Magistrate’s Courts, instead of only Supreme Court criminal cases as at present.
