Addington Market

Sheep values ease

Although high quality lines were'easy to sell there was a general easing of values at the store sheep sale at Addington yesterday. Some excellent sheep were yarded but in many cases quality was disappointing and sold at levels below those at recent ewe fairs: In line with recent trends the straight-bred Romney was the sheep many buyers were after and these sold well. A pen of well woolled annual draft Romneys from K. J. and H. W. Dalglish (Le Bons Bay) made $3O. Similar quality sheep from A. J. Hutchison (Wainui) sold for $29.20. Other adult Romney ewes sold mainly between $l7 and $24.20. Annual draft Perendales and Coopworths had a reasonable sale with most pens in the $16.90 to $23.10 bracket.

Older fine-wooled sheep were harder to sell than the strong-woolled lines. There were few Corriedales, or Halfbreds over the $22 mark. Many lines were below $2O. The adult ewe offering was 14,292 (16,651 last week). The situation for the 4883 two-tooth ewes yarded (5296 last week), was similar. There were few feature lines of sheep from well-known vendors and the quality of most of the stock offered was only average. Top quality strong and fine woolled two-tooths sold at around $3O but for most pens of Corriedales, Romneys, and Coopworths values ranged from $23.60 to $28.20. An outstanding line of 241 Border Leicester-Corriedale cross from the Morchard Account (Darfield) sold to $33.60. For Coopworths the best price was $3l and for Romneys $31.80. Again interest centred on the Romneys but there was the usual interest in Corriedales and Halfbreds. The store lamb market was remarkably consistent. Wether lambs, especially strong-wooled types, improved by $1 and all ewe lambs held to late rates. There were 14,292 lambs offered (8153 last week) but buying power remained consistent to the final pens sold.

J. S. and L. H. Scott (Oxford) had the best of the ■Romney ewe lambs. They sold 167 between $15.20 and $18.60. A real feature of the sale Was a line of 105 Poll Dorset ewe lambs from R. Lough (Dunsandel). These made $21.40.

Other strong-woolled ewe lambs were between $14.50 and $l7. Corriedale ewe lambs ranged from $13.80 to $15.70. ; The best wether lamb price was $15.80, this for a pen of Halfbreds, but most lines were between $12.20 and $15.60.
