$800,000 extensions to No. 7 jetty for roll-on quarter-ramp vessels

£ The ever-changing face £of Lyttelton reflects the nature of ships land shipping. •

A major project now un?der way at the port is on to the No. 7 .-jetty, where modifications '• are being made to provide 3 for roll-on quarter-ramp vessels due in port later this year. 2 The $BOO,OOO project ■fi should be completed by July this year to meet the needs of the new type vessels being introduced into international service by g Polish and Soviet interests.

These vessels move unitised cargoes, including containers, pallets, baled goods, cars, cases of furniture, drums of chemicals,

and dry or liquid bulk commodities.

The cargoes can be worked by forklift trucks or prime mover-trailer combinations using ramp access, and by crane from the upper deck.

The construction under way will provide deep water berthage for vessels up to 228 m in length whose quarter-ramp facility allows them to berth alongside the extended jetty.

At the same time work has begun on pulling piles and shortening the adjacent No. 6 jetty. Also proposed for development in the shortterm is that area between the Container Terminal and Gladstone Pier where some 7.1 ha will be re-

claimed to yield an extension to the Inner Harbour terminal, with a berth 410 m in length extending seaward by a further 90 m. Over all, the Harbour Board is considering proposals for major redevelopment work — a SIOM multi-staged project that will:

— Provide a new bulk trade berth alongside Cashin Quay breakwater;

— Allow reclamation and development of approximately four hectares in the inner harbour area. This will replace jetties 3,4, 5 and 6 and give alternative berthing facilities; and — See the extension of container terminal berthage and associated facilities.
