Springs Road cyclists

Sir, — In the last six months at least three cyclist; have been injured when knocked from their cycles on Springs Road between Lincoln College and Sock* burn. This road, which is very narrow, possibly even under-width, carries a steadily increasing volume of fast and heavy traffic, at the times most critical for, cyclists, especially schoolchildren. Cyclists who travel this exposed road are buffetted by winds while cars and buses zoom past, often too close for safety. The schoolchildren and students who are forced to cycle on this road are placed in a very dangerous situation every day. Cycle tracks are urgentlv needed on the sides of this road. The problem is: How can the Paparua County Council possibly finance cycle lanes on this road, and the many others urgently needed? Unfortunately, it appears that tragedy will affect the road users of this area before we can establish our priorities, and thereby afford protection for these innocents at risk. — Yours, etc., D. C. LEARY. February 25, 1980.
