West Indies tour

Sir, — What a childish attitude to sport the West Indies are showing us with the present cricket tour. They have the four fastest men in the business at present and when they "'come up against a concerted effort at batting that cannot be faulted except by the West Indies, they pick on the quietest and „i-...;t authorative persons on any cricket pitch, the umpires. Because they cannot penetrate the good batting they resort to complaining of the umpires’ decisions. There are right channels of communication for airing grievances in the cricke*. code. The West Indies have a very impressive cricketing record which most countries would envy but what a psychologically sick cricket team we are seeing when we can beat them with a provincial side. It only shows me that New Zealand, w ; ‘h a little more luck, could have won Che Prudential World Cup and have been greater ambassadors for their countrj' than the cricketers we have here at present. — Yours, etc., ROY G. WALLEY, Hanmer Springs. February 25, 1980.

Sir, — To the perceptive reader of your columns, it must be clear that the West! Indian cricketers are our opponents. What, regrettably, is less apparent is that they are guests in our country and that, as such, they are entitled to treatment in accordance with the laws of hospitality. On the evidence of this tour (and the 1977 Lions tour before it) chauvinism .is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing sports among sports writers. Unless it is brought under control, we could in the future, find ourselves short of opponents willing to endure it. — Yours, etc., W. R. ALLARDYCE. February 26, 1980.

Sir. — The West Indian cricketers; how we have loved them! It did not matter that, almost without exception, they 1 ' beat us. They were our favourite overseas visitors because of their beautiful, cavalier attitude to the game. Please, Clive Lloyd and Mr Rodriguez, do

not let this team spoil your wonderful reputation. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) M. L. SEATTER. February 26, 1980.
