New Tourist Dept head

PA Wellington New Zealand’s Deputy High Commissioner and Minister in Canberra (Mr W. N. Plimmer) has been appointed general manager of the Tourist and Publicity Department.

He succeeds the late Mr M. S. Roberts, who was killed in the DCIO crash in the Antarctic.

Mr Plimmer, aged 42, was educated at Palmerston North Boys’ High School and Victoria and Auckland Universities, graduating with an M.A. degree in history. He taught briefly at Naenae College before joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1961.

Mr Plimmer has served overseas at Apia; Washington, where he was first secretary responsible for public and press relations; and Rome, where he was counsellor at the New Zealand Embassy. He has represented New Zealand at several international conferences, and was permanent representative at the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation in Rome. Mr Plimmer was appointed head of the Australia and Americas division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1977, and in 1978 was named Deputy High Commissioner in Canberra. The State Services Commission, announcing his appointment, said that Mr Plimmer had been closely associated with the development of tourism, travel promotion, and information in New Zealand’s economic relations with" Australia.
