Appeal fails on fishing charge
PA Auckland An appeal against the conviction and sentence of the master of a Korean fishing vessel found fishing in the New Zealand economic zone without a licence has been disallowed.
Chun Woong Kim, the master of the ship, had said that he knew he was prohibited from trawling, but did not realise the prohibition extended to long-line fishing.
Mr Justice Speight said that a plea of ignorance of the law was no help in this case. His Honour also disallowed an appeal against fines and levies of slightly more than $64,000 imposed by the magistrate who tried the case.
