Taxi owners back smoking ruling
PA Auckland A court decision that passengers may smoke in taxis has the support of the Taxi Proprietors’ Federation. The federation believed that people should be free to enjoy the right to smoke in a taxi, its national president, Mr M. Hawthorne, has said. .Mr J. B. Bergin, S.M., had previously ruled in the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland that taxi-drivers
were not legally entitled to ban smoking in their cabs. Mr Hawthorne said that the issue had divided drivers for the last five or six years. At this year’s national conference, an Auckland faction had tried to get federation support for a petition demanding a change in the law so that drivers could ban smoking passengers, but members had rejected the move, he said.
